While I do love developing recipes for all my loaves out there, I cannot think of a better thing to do than bake something that makes my dogs happy. These homemade dog muffins are full of apples, carrots, peanut butter and all things natural for your four legged friends.

And thanks to my friends at BubbaDog WoodWorks, I was able to easily and safely chop up all the fruits and veggies for this recipe. Bubba Dog makes handmade cutting boards that can even be customized with your very own logo! Named after their dog, Tux, who responds most often to “Bubba Dog,” their boards are the perfect choice for bakers, cooks, and dog lovers alike.

The Ingredients for the Homemade Dog Muffins

The ingredients here for the homemade dog muffins are pretty simple, but be sure to double check that they are all natural and free from anything that might harm your pup!

  • Organic apple sauce: This is the main “binding” ingredient for the recipe, but can easily be swapped out for a ripe, mashed banana if you have one lying around
  • Peanut butter: A dog’s favorite snack! Make sure the peanut butter is free from any xanthan gum as that is not a dog’s best friend
  • Raw honey: Another sticky little binder for the recipe and if you choose to shop local, the honey could help with your pup’s allergies
  • Water: Self explanatory here. The final bit of liquid to get these pup cakes in shape
  • Egg: Next to the apple sauce, the egg will give you the final structure for the homemade dog muffins, while also thickening the batter up into that classic muffin texture
  • Whole wheat
flour: I like to use whole wheat as its good for pups, but you can also use oat flour! Just stray away from all-purpose for your pups
  • Baking powder: The rising agent
  • Carrots and Apples: Dogs can’t have chocolate chips, but that doesn’t mean their homemade dog muffins have to be missing a delicious crunch! That’s where the apples and carrots come in

The Process

Prepare our kitchen by preheating the oven to 350ºF and pre measuring the ingredients into small, individual bowls. In a medium sized bowl, add the flour and baking powder to a bowl, whisk together and set aside. In a large bowl, add the apple sauce, peanut butter, honey, water and egg and whisk it all together. Fold in the flour mixture until fully combined. Finally, add in the carrots and apples and combine once again.

Then, scoop the batter into a greased mini muffin tin and bake for 15-20 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean from the center of the muffins. Allow the muffins to cool for 30 minutes before letting your dogs dig in!

The Tips

Why is this recipe in Grams?

Baking is a science and in science you want things to be exact and precise. The best way to do this is by weighing out your ingredients using a simple scale. Ever baked a cookie using the same recipe, yet somehow it turns out slightly different each time? That is because when measuring by volume, you can’t be as precise. It is vital that your ingredient ratios are accurate for a reliable bake every time.

How long do the homemade dog muffins last in the fridge?

I prefer to keep these dog treats pretty fresh for the pups, which is why this is a pretty small batch of treats. But in an airtight container, the muffins should last for about 1 week.

Do I have to make them in mini muffin tins?

Nope! You can certainly bake these muffins “normal” sized, but they may take a bit longer to bake. I would also watch your pup carefully when eating these for the first time, if they are at the “normal” muffin size. I don’t know about you, but my dogs are big “gobblers” and will scarf down all kinds of food. The larger muffin might be too big for your pup to take in one mouthful, so just be careful! That’s why I like the mini muffin… they are perfectly “pup” sized!
