#1 – Food Scale

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, baking is a science. If you are going to measure ingredients by weight, which you should, you will need a reliable food scale to get that done. The one here is the scale I use daily to create the recipes on my blog.

#2 – Electric Mixer

A good electric mixer will not only save you time, but also ensure the ingredients are properly mixed. I grew up baking with a stand mixer, but those are definitely a larger investment. For beginner bakers, I recommend purchasing a hand mixer. They are sturdy, compact, easy to store and will last you a long while.

#3 – Oven Thermometer

Check your oven temperature! This handy gadget measures the ambient temperature inside of your oven and is designed to easily hang from directly on the wire racks. This tool is durable and can be a reliable source to ensure your oven is the temperature you require.

#4 – Mixing Bowls

Starting with one mixing bowl will get you a long way, but having a mix of sizes and types of material for your mixing bowls is super important, especially for pre-measuring ingredients. I have glass, metal and plastic mixing bowls, but I think basic plastic ones are the best place to start. They are durable, make clean up easy and typically have some sort of non-stick quality to them.

#5 – All of the Spatulas!

These are tools you will likely replace several times over the years, but if you have good one, that won’t be very often. Rubber spatulas are pretty versatile and can be used across all types of bakes. In situations where a metal spoon will get too hot and rubber might melt, the wooden spatula is sturdy and reliable, doesn’t conduct heat, and it’s great to use for hot items.
