An air fryer is one of the most underrated kitchen appliances. My husband and I received ours as a gift one year but didn’t unlock its potential until a few years later. The recipe that began our love affair with the Air Fryer?
Sweet Potato Fries.
We’ve tried out a few variations of spice combination, cooking times and temperatures and finally settled on this go-to super simple Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fry Recipe. These delectable bites are crispy on the outside, melty on the inside and fill your entire mouth with flavor and heat. They will make for a perfect side to a sandwich or even a snack all on their own.
Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries – What You’ll Need:
- 1 Large Bowl
- Fruit & Vegetable Peeler
- Air Fryer
- A Sharp Knife (Sweet Potatoes can be tricky to cut)
- Cutting Board
- 2 Sweet Potatoes
- ¼ tsp each of Garlic, Cumin & Oregano
- 1 tsp each of Paprika, Salt & Pepper
- 4 tbsp Olive Oil (or oil of choice)
The Process
First, pre-measure your spices and give them a quick stir in a small bowl.
Next, peel your sweet potatoes. If you are using organic sweet potatoes or prefer to keep the skins on, that is definitely an option. Just be sure to wash the sweet potatoes under water and pat dry before slicing.
After peeling, slice the sweet potatoes into pinky sized slices. To do this, cut the sweet potato in half lengthwise. Then lay the halves flat side down on a cutting board, and cut into strips that are about pinky-sized.
Next, add the sliced sweet potatoes to a large bowl, top with oil and your pre-measured spices and toss everything together until it is well mixed.
Finally, bake in small batches in the air fryer at 400 degrees for 20 mins tossing a few times in between. Be sure not to overload the air fryer basket. This recipe is a few servings worth – depending on the size of your airfryer, you may want to do 3-4 batches.
Enjoy on their own or with your favorite dipping sauce!
The Tips
If I bake these in batches, how can I keep the Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries warm?
If you can show restraint and not gobble these down immediately after they come out of the air fryer, simply place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. When the last batch of fries is about 5 minutes away from being done, pop the pan into a 400º preheated oven. Remove after 5 minutes and everything will have reached the same temperature.
Do I have to peel the sweet potatoes?
You definitely can leave the skins on, especially if you are using organic sweet potatoes or just prefer to leave the skins on. All you have to do is wash them under water and pat dry before or after slicing.
Help! My Air Fryer doesn’t have a pre-heating option!
Don’t stress! Mine doesn’t either. Simply set the timer for 5 minutes longer than the recipe states, turn to the right temperature and bake! The extra time will give the Air Fryer proper preheating and baking time.
